7 Print Design Blogs You Should Be Reading

Posted on April 21, 2015 | Updated on June 14, 2023

Print design – the original format for design – is no less important than it was in the past. While digital design has become a major focus, print design is critical for designers looking for ways to attract new customers, to expand offerings and to help build brands offline.

Need to brush up on your print design skills? Want to stay at the forefront of the latest trends and technologies? You should be reading the following 7 print design blogs.

7 Print Design Blogs You Should Be Reading

1. PRINT

Aptly named, PRINT is an online and hard-copy magazine geared toward print design. From featured interviews with today’s most renowned print designers to tips and education for building the skills of readers, PRINT provides inspiration to any reader looking to expand their print design capabilities.

2. Creative Bloq

Creative Bloq is produced for designers from all walks of life, digital and print included. However, its print offerings are especially strong. The site offers fonts of the week, tangible design examples and information on national conferences for designers. Available in a digital magazine format, a website and an emailed daily digest, Creative Bloq is a can’t miss collection for print designers.

3. You The Designer

You the Designer brands itself as a graphic design lifestyle blog. It regularly highlights the best of print design – comics included – along with what should be avoided to maintain a successful design portfolio. The blog releases new articles on an almost-daily schedule and is filled with actionable tips for print designers.

4. Company Folders

Company Folders’ blog is designed for print designers in the corporate world. While the brand itself focuses on its namesake – branded company folders – the blog provides examples and tutorials for everything from business cards to logo design. Especially helpful are its pieces on popular design software tools and fonts that separate great designs from those that are more mundane. For corporate print designers, Company Folders’ blog is a must read.

5. Spoon Graphics

There’s no way around it: print design is different from designing for the screen. What something looks like on your laptop screen might be different than how it appears on paper. The best print designers know this and must constantly update their techniques to produce high-quality work. Chris Spooner, who authors UK-based Spoon Graphics, gets this distinction and works to provide easy-to-follow tutorials for creating out of this world print designs.

6. InDesign Secrets

There are hundreds of print design and layout software options available. However, one of the most tried and true – and also one of the most complicated and best-maintained – is InDesign. InDesign Secrets provides a wealth of information for designers who use the software to create first-class print designs. Featuring tips of the week, InDesign fundamental videos and solutions to common frustrations, the blog is essential for any designer using InDesign on a regular basis.

7. Grain Edit

One of the best ways to improve design skills is to learn about those that are already doing great things, to visualize their work and to learn their secrets. Grain Edit features regular designer highlights combined with a plethora of tips and tutorials for building print design skills.

If print design is your focus, or something you’d like to hone in on in the future, reading about what’s going on in that space is essential. The comprehensive list above is a solid starting point. What are you waiting for? Get reading today.

Why do we have to make print design? Please explain to me, I cannot get it clearly.

    • Eleanor on May 10, 2019 at 7:48 am

Great question! For one, cross-channel marketing is still an active part in a lot of companies’ marketing strategies. Not everyone goes on social media every single day and not everyone reads every piece of mail or magazine they receive. Cross-channel marketing has a higher conversion rate because it reaches the masses with the same marketing goal/strategy in mind.

Another reason is older consumers. Those from the Baby Boomer Generation and some of Generation X don’t use social media on a regular basis. And if they do, would they know what to do when faced with your business page’s updates or ads? As stated above, reach your consumers where you think they’ll find it.

It is true that not every industry or company will do a 50/50 split of their marketing efforts on social media/web and print advertising. But from my professional knowledge, no company should be 100% one way or the other.

If you’re still unsure about this approach, feel free to check out these articles:
